Implemented by Al Rousan Co. The border Port with the Sultanate of Oman (Shaybah).. The difficult challenge in roads industry. The Ministry of Transport is currently executing one of the strategic and vital projects represented in the project of the road leading to the border port with the Sultanate of Oman (Shaybah) across the Rub Alkhali desert along (246) kilometers.

This project implemented by Al Rousan Co is one of the strategic and vital projects where it connects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman directly, and the Rub Alkhali desert is one of the hardest working areas for the difficulty of its terrain, consisting of sand dunes moving very high as well as many of marshes, as the dramatic continuing movement of the wind on these sands create great difficulties in implementation. The project consists of the establishment and paving of the road to the border port with Oman along 246 (last part) including the construction of a single road with two traffic lanes, and an additional lane in some areas with vertical slopes as a route for trucks. The road starts at a point before the Shaybah Oil Well belonging to Aramco of Saudi Arabia at the station No.(386 +500) and up to the border at the Sultanate of Oman, note that the amount of the sand settlement in this project is 132 million m3, and runs through the Rub Al Khali desert, consisting of high sand dunes and strong winds, and many of salty marshes. As well as traffic safety works such as paints, signals and quadruple cables tightened to protect the areas of higher dunes up to more than (40) meters, where the quantities of project backfilling amounted to more than (130) million cubic meters. This project is one of the strategic and vital projects in the region where it connects directly Saudi Arabia and Sultanate of Amman and runs through the desert of Rub Al Khali, which consists of sand dunes the height of which in some areas exceed 120 meters and is characterized by a lot of dust especially in summer due to the intensity of wind in the region, which makes the implementation of such a project very difficult. The movement of sand from one area to another as a result of strong winds and the existence of many marshes of ground water on the surface necessitates certain works to be done for special treatment of these marshes to build the road, and the work also requires construction of a fabric mesh shield to protect the road from water rise. In addition , the difficulty of the project increases because there are no villages or settlements and the lack of safe drinking water, where desalination plants have to be established to be able to meet the project staff needs of water for washing and for other purposes. The project includes lighting along its last part (30) kilometers near the border in order to facilitate cars and trucks at the port. Also the difficulty of implementation is that the road passes over the Petroleum field of Chiba (20) km, which requires special care in dealing with existing services within the field such as pipes and power lines, telephone lines and electrical towers. The fact that the desert of the Rub Al Khali is not populated makes it difficult to provide the project\\\'s needs of fuel and spare parts and materials to the work of asphalt and the daily requirements of the workers from food, drink and construction as the nearest occupied place that can meet such needs is (400) kilometers away from the project site, which requires employment of many purchases delegates and many cars to supply those needs. To secure communications with the project a Web was installed to communicate with project staff and workers. The project site has also been provided in full with the requirements of entertainment such as golf ball, galleries and TV hall and others.
